Arizona and the Grand Canyon – Unit Study Resources
Here’s a simple list of resources I used for our Arizona and Grand Canyon unit studies. Full disclosure – I am not a teacher. I’m a mom who’s fairly organized, likes research, and has a lot of really great teacher friends who point me in the right direction.
PBS Learning Media
Oh my gosh, I had no idea this existed but it is so, so helpful. Not only does it have great content, it also provides support materials and educational standards. These were my kids’ favorite videos:
The Grand Canyon: How It Formed
Wilson and Ditch – Grand Canyon, Arizona
Making North America | Uncovering Layers of the Grand Canyon
National Park Service – Grand Canyon
The National Park Service does a great job including kids in their programs. These four (free!) printables provide good, accurate information and are a great primer for additional conversation and your visit to the park.
National Geographic Kids – Grand Canyon National Park
This website provide a good overview of the Canyon and the animals that live there.
National Parks: A Kid’s Guide to America’s Parks, Monuments and Landmarks
We checked this book out from the library and it’s been a amazing time filler when one kid finishes an activity before the other, or when I need to make my son read something other than a Minecraft book.
Teachers Pay Teachers
This free sorting activity from Laura Candler was a great way to get my kids out of their chairs and doing something together. It was a good follow-up to the The Grand Canyon | How It Formed video.
3 Boys and a Dog
I used this Arizona State Fact File Worksheet to kick off our unit study. It was a great way to cover the basics.
